| * San Jose, CA: Joanne Marian Segovia is facing close to 20 years in prison for importing and distributing large quantities of synthetic opioid drugs from overseas. The criminal complaint alleges that between October 2015 and January 2023, Segovia had at least 61 shipments mailed to her home from places like Singapore, Hong Kong, India and Hungary. The shipments included valeryl fentanyl among others. The investigation was part of a Homeland Security investigation into a network that was shipping controlled substances into the Bay Area. Segovia is also accused of using home and workplace computers as well as shipping from her workplace. Segovia has worked for the San Jose Police Union since 2003 and when arrested she had been the longtime executive director of the SJ Police Union… I wonder if she had a CCW??? * Alameda County: Alameda County DA sent an email update that appears to show a plan to reduce or eliminate jail time, specifically in the case of the murder of Jasper Wu. Jasper was 23 months old and was killed by gang violence. “It happened because two rival gangs were having a rolling gun battle on Highway 880.” In a response to a request for an update on the case, the DA sent an email that in part stated “Our office is currently working on a partnership with the Asian Law Caucus to support AAPI victims of violence in ways that open up broader possibilities for healing and non-carceral forms of accountability.” Interestingly, the Asian Law Caucus was asked about their thoughts and they said they had only had an introductory meeting and it had nothing to do with the Jasper Wu case. |   |

  | * Ukraine: Ukraine’s General Staff reported Thursday that Russian forces were making gains in Bakhmut. The battle there has been raging for five months and has taken a serious toll on both sides. * China & Brazil: The two nations have agreed and signed a deal to conduct bilateral trade in their own currencies and not in the U.S. dollar. This continues an ongoing strategy of the Chinese of de-dollarizing international trade. This not only impacts the strength of the U.S. dollar but insulates China against international sanctions if they were to do something such as invade Taiwan. It should be noted that a French energy company just completed a purchase of Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) of 65,000 tons from China and the sale was conducted in Chinese Yuan instead of dollars. |
